Are you a normal person or you normally test your limits? Let me explain what I am saying. Many of us love extreme actions and test ourselves to the extreme whenever the opportunity arises. For example, if there is a stunt event in the town, such people will go and watch it and then try the same stunt without any training. They risk their life in many such adventures but that is their nature. Are you one of these?

In business and job, such people will again react and act in extreme manner. Other co-workers will think many times before approaching boss for anything, but not those who test their limits. They think nothing of he consequences. They act like this in all life situations.

Why these people act like this? They probably enjoy adventure. They don’t care for the results. They are ready to face the worst and also don’t fear the worst. They have great confidence and belief in themselves. For them the whole life is an adventure.

it sounds strange but it is true. Few days back a young boy of about four and half years ran non-stop for sixty-five kilometers in India. If this is not testing the limits then what is it? The boy is adventurous and so is the coach. Though Government Of India is looking at this as violation of human right, because the child can suffer irreparable damage to his bones and kidneys, this example tells about how such people test the limits.

Ironman Triathlon-Run Equipment Choices

There are several run-equipment choices I feel can help you quite a lot in your quest for your first Ironman Trathlon finisher medal.

SHOES- Of course well fitting shoes are a priority. I’ve tried every sort of shoe you can imagine over the years and have come to this conclusion:

You can train just as well and stay just as injury free in $50 shoes as you can in $150 dollar shoes. For instance, what if an outlet has a brand new 2005 model shoe on sale for $69, and sells the new, improved (same shoe) 2006 model for $149. Does that mean the older model was no good and will hurt your feet? Of course not! In order to stay competetive, manufacturers have to continually make small changes and/or improvements in their product to stay in step with the competition.

The change from one year to the next may just be in the color, or new lacing system or a bit more build-up in some part of the shoe. Sometimes the change is really small.

Just shop around. See whats out there and in your training try several different types of shoes and when you find the one that just feels great, fits perfect, and never gives you blisters no matter how far you run—then that’s your race day shoe. Try and make your choice for a race day shoe the lightest of all your shoes.

Remember: Whatever you do, don’t go out and buy some fancy shoe for Ironman day because it looks really great. Go with the old shoe that got you there. Don’t make any late changes.

I heard this story years ago and have never forgotten it and it’s just a great example of what I’m talking about.

It’s 1960, Rome Olympic Games. An African from Ethiopia shows up for the games. He is running in the marathon. He has no shoes. He didn’t train in shoes. He trained back home by chasing rabbits for miles in his bare feet. A major shoe distributor at the games gave him a brand new pair of shoes to wear. He put them on. They hurt his feet. He took them off. Said “No, thank you”. He ran the marathon in bare feet. Twenty miles were over the cobblestones of Rome.

HE WON THE GOLD MEDAL!!

Now the shoe manufacturer really LOVES him and gives him shoes to train in at home.

FLASH AHEAD 4 YEARS TO THE NEXT OLYMPIC GAMES–

This African runner from Ethiopia shows up at the Olympic Games. He is entered in the Marathon again. He is wearing shoes that he trained in at home. They don’t hurt his feet now.

HE WON THE GOLD MEDAL!! AGAIN!!

HIs name is Abibe Bikila. The first African to win olympic gold–now they are a dynasty.

The moral of the story is:

If he had worn the shoes for the 1960 Olympics, not only would he have not won gold, he would have trashed his feet. Just imagine the blisters. He wasn’t accustomed to wearing shoes.

If he had not worn shoes in the 1964 Olympics, not only would he have not won gold, he still would have trashed his feet. He wasn’t accustomed to bare feet anymore and his feet would not have the same toughness as the previous olympic games.

So I repeat: Go with the footwear that you’ve done lots of training in. Don’t make any late changes. When I found a pair of racing shoes I just loved, I wore them training until they were nicely broken in. I put those elastic, lock laces on them, so I never had to tie them again and I put them away. I wore them for 5 Ironman races. In that last transition, it was like putting on a favorite pair of slippers. I NEVER had blisters or foot problems. I ran one Ironman marathon in 3:34 in those same shoes.

FUEL BELT-I was so glad to see these come on the market. It used to really bug me to run a long distance in training with a water bottle on my hip. I just seemed out of balance. For that reason, I never bothered taking a water bottle out on an Ironman run course. You should really make a fuel-belt a part of your Ironman run-equipment for training and racing. The belt I prefer holds 6 smaller containers. They are spread out around your waist so you don’t feel out of balance and you hardly know they’re there during your runs. These are a particularly good idea for the Ironman marathon because you can use them for your favorite fuel if its not being supplied on the course. The belt also has reflectors built in for night running.

HEART MONITOR- I really feel that everyone training for an Ironman should make use of a heart monitor. It’s just a really important piece of run-equipment. See my page on training with a heart monitor.

WEAR A CAP- I’m not sure why some Ironman Triathletes don’t wear hats. They provide protection from the sun of course–but more than that–they are ideal for putting cold water in(or ice) at aid stations to keep you cool. On extremely hot days you just HAVE to do everything you can to keep your body cool.

CLOTHING- For training of course, you have to dress for the weather in your part of the world. For race day however there are a few ways you can go.

TRISUITS are a really good idea. You wear the trisuit under your wetsuit and you’re good to go for the other two events. Usually they dry out pretty quickly, but you may be cool in the early portion of the bike ride.

A second option is tri-shorts and a seperate top. The shorts are padded for the bike and like the trisuit, you just wear the shorts and top under your wetsuit.

A third option is just wear a swimsuit under your wetsuit and make a complete change into clean, dry, and warm cycling clothes. Then make another complete change at transition two into running clothes.

In my later races when time was more of a factor for me, I went with the second option. I preferred a seperate top, because I had pockets(similar to a cycling jersey)sewn into the top to hold food. Normally trisuits don’t come with pockets and its not really the type of material you can sew a pocket onto. Also, if I felt like changing into running shorts at the second transition it was a simple operation. Just wear the same top and change shorts.

For your first Ironman the run-equipment you choose can make a big difference in how you perform on the day.

The clothing you choose will make a difference to your comfort level on race day. I would recommend for your first Ironman Triathlon, that you take your time and go with clothing option number three. Just wear a swimsuit under your wetsuit, make a complete change into cycling clothes, and make a complete change into Your favorite running clothes and shoes for the marathon.

A preview of May’s UK Horse Racing

May ushers in the first Classics of the current turf Flat season, beginning with the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 6. All eyes will be upon the short-priced favourite George Washington as he bids to bring trainer Aidan OBrien back-to-back victories in the colts Classic following Footstepsinthesands smart success twelve months ago.

In recent years the 2,000 Guineas has been the personal preserve of the Flats big battalions with Sir Michael Stoute, Saeed Bin Suroor and Aidan OBrien dominating the race year after year with a succession of expensive blue-bloods.

This time around its the tight-lipped OBrien who seems to hold all the aces courtesy of the aforementioned George Washington, a brilliant, if at times temperamental, colt who swept all before him as a juvenile and sets out this season to prove hes not just a two-year-old wonder but can mix it with the best and come out on top as a three-year-old.

Only Barry Hills and Dermot Weld have broken the big boys monopoly of the 2,000 and this year its Marcus Tregoning who has been cast in the role of party-pooper as he bids interrupt the top guns by training Sir Percy to land the opening Classic. Regarded as the best horse that hes ever trained by his astute handler, last seasons Dewhurst winner is sure to go close in a race that will be run to suit his talents.

On the same day Newmarket stages the Palace House Stakes, a Group 3 for up-and-coming sprinters and the fast-improving Reverence well be an interesting runner while over at Haydock, the jumps stages a last hurrah with the valuable William Hill Swinton Handicap Hurdle, and Philip Hobbs could hold a strong hand here courtesy of Wellbeing and Motorway, two progressive and late-blossoming timber-toppers.

On Sunday May 7, its the fillies turn to strut their stuff in the 1,000 Guineas where Gololphins Silcas Sister, Ballydoyles Rumplestiltskin and Race For the Stars will do battle with John Gosdens Nanina for the fillies Blue Riband. On the same day Breeders Cup hero Shirocco is likely to come up against Sir Michael Stoutes late-developer Hard Top and the evergreen John Porter winner, Mubtaker, in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket. Spring gallop s reports have singled out the Stoute horse for top honours.

Chesters prestigious three-day meeting follows hot on the heels of Newmarket and the Derby hopefuls will be on show in the MBNA Europe Bank Chester Vase (May 11), with the fillies taking centre stage in the Weatherbys Bank Cheshire Oaks on May 10. Barry Hills has a superb record on this turning track and any horse he runs in the previous two races will be worth close inspection.

On Wednesday May 10 the totesport Chester Cup is the meetings big betting race and recent Newmarket winner Mikao set down an early marker for this big staying prize. Four-year-olds often run well here and trainer Barry Hills boasts an excellent record. Friday, May 12, closes the Chester meeting and the feature race for the older horses is the Blue Square Ormonde Stakes landed last year by Day Flight.

The run of Classic trials continues at Lingfield on May 13 with the Letheby and Christopher Derby Trial and the totesport.com Oaks Trials respectively for the real things at Epsom the following month. It isnt just the Classic colts and fillies that are in the firing-line at Lingfield because the Surrey course also stages the totesport Victoria Cup, a closely fought and always influential 7f handicap that frequently throws up a Royal Ascot winner or two.

Over in France the following day, May 14, the European Flat season raises the volume with the Poule deEssai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas) and the Poulai dEssai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas) on the same card at Longchamp.
Ballydoyle and Godolphin have begun to target these two important races in recent seasons and their runners should be respected, but Criquette Head-Maareks Quiet Royale will be fancied for the Pouliches after a satisfactory spin in second at Longchmap the other day.

Flat racings domestic caravan rolls on to York for their three-day Dante meeting and the potential Oaks fillies will run in the Musidora Stakes on May 17, the meetings opening salvo which is now a Wednesday on account of the fixture moving forward by a single day.

On May 18 the Derby hopefuls will run in the Dante Stakes and its worth recalling that in recent times, North Light and Motivator, the last two winners of this race, have gone on to glory at Epsom in just over three weeks time, while looking a little further back in the races illustrious history, its worth noting that Shahrastani, Reference point, Erhaab and Benny The Dip all went on from the Dante to Derby success.

This mile and a quarter Group 2 contest has clearly become a key Classic trial in recent seasons and mustnt be missed. Theres sure to be a host of top-class performers in contention on the Knavesmire and Sir Michael Stoute has the best contemporary Dante record with two winners and three placed horses.

On the same day as the Dante keep a close eye upon the outcome of the Hambleton Stakes, a valuable mile handicap that has a habit of throwing up the winner of the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot the following month especially if the Hambleton winner is trained by Sir Michael Stoute.

The final day of the Dante meeting sees the stayers take centre stage in the Yorkshire Cup, a useful pointer to the rest of the campaigns leading staying races. Alan Swinbanks stable star Collier Hill, a winner of the Irish St Leger last season, is a likely runner and may well be capable of surprising more fancied horses.

On May 20 its the turn of the seasons crack milers to unleash their firepower in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and this has been a good race for Saeed Bin Suroor and the boys in blue in recent seasons, and it would be no surprise to see them land this Group1 event with Proclamation, who is surely heading for the top after joining Godolphin on the back of a brilliant three-year-old season.

In France the following day Longchamps Prix dIspahan always draws the top mile and mile and a quarter horses and this a race that mustnt be missed as a key pointer to some of the seasons top races over this classic ten furlongs.

The month of May rounds off with the Irish 2,000 Guineas on May 27 followed by the Irish 1,000 Guineas on the following day. Both these valuable races tend to go to horses that have raced in the equivalent events at Newmarket and inevitably British trainers hold an excellent record in both races.

Finally, Sandowns two-day fixture at the very end of the month is always informative with the Henry 11 Stakes for top-notch staying horses on May 29 followed on May 30 by the Temple Stakes for sprinters over the minimum trip and the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes in which trainer Sir Michael Stoute boats a useful record. Any runner from his yard should be noted carefully.

Now Im reading this blog titled I Hate Racists on ihatethis.org that is filled with venom and hatred towards racism and bigotry. By preaching sheer hatred like this you are only adding fuel to the fires that burn in a world already filled with hatred and violence.

Most of us are waiting for the world to come together in peace. We may never reach that and it may seem like a farfetched dream, but together we must find the means. We must create a safe and secure environment for our children and our childrens children.

Racism is a difficult subject to tackle and in order to form a culture free of such racism, we must begin with education. If you dont want your children to grow up in a word of hatred, teach them tolerance toward race, religion, color, and sexual orientation. We must expose racism and bigotry for what they are.

It is important to understand what racism is. Wikipedia describes racism as Historically, it has been defined as the belief that race is the primary determinant of human capacities that a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation. Sometimes racism means beliefs, practices, and institutions that discriminate against people based on their perceived or ascribed race.

Racism is based on ignorance, stereotyping and learned hatred. Many people accept that we live in a diverse society today and we appreciate different cultures. However, there are still large segments of society that wont accept human capacities are not determined by race.

There is no doubt in my mind that we need to find a healthy solution to end racism. It is important to understand the nature of racism and intolerance. Together we can end prejudice. Racism is not an issue that will be easily resolved, and the sooner that we begin to work together the sooner well come to a solution. There is a history of racism that cannot be undone but we can look to the future and make positive changes in how society views those of different ethnic backgrounds.

Give your children the opportunity to develop close friendships with people of different races. Teach your children to accept people as individuals. We must teach them that there is no room for discrimination. Remember that our children are influenced by the world around them.

When we first decide to make positive changes in our lives, we usually underestimate the amount of effort it will take. It’s easy to dream and imagine a better life, but we also need to give form to our thoughts with decisive action. And that’s where most of us get stuck.

Imagine that you wanted to build a house, and think about the process that needs to be put into place. 3) Make the right decisions. Adapting to change requires consistent decision-making. When you decide to quit smoking, you don’t make that decision just once and be done with it. You need to make that decision over and over again as the cravings arise, until you no longer desire to smoke. If you decide to exercise every day, you will need to make that decision again each day, day after day, week after week – even if you don’t feel like exercising initially. The same process applies to any changes you are trying to make in your life. Moment to moment, you need to choose the actions that will result in what you are trying to create. In order to do this, you may need to develop a deeper level of awareness about your own actions, especially if you find yourself automatically gravitating toward unproductive actions.

Remember that improvement is a process, and it takes consistent effort and focus. The good news is that once we begin the process, it gets easier every time we choose the right actions. Moment to moment, we do have the power to choose. If we take our time and enjoy the journey, we can’t fail.
